Independent Medical Examinations & Medical Consultations

Independent Medical Examinations (IME) are available through OSF Saint Francis Center for Occupational Health. Most often, an IME is referred by the employer or their designated agents, but sometimes this is requested by the employee or employee's legal representative. The purpose of an IME is to respond to the referral source's questions with an objective medical opinion. Common questions to address include: causation; maximal medical improvement; treatment options; work capabilities.

IME's often require extensive medical records review. Having medical records available at least a week prior to the appointment is required to assure physician familiarity with the case. Medical records should have duplicate records removed and be in chronological order.

Medical Consultations are most often made by the current medical provider, but also sometimes by the insurance carrier/TPA. The purpose for this service is to render a specific opinion regarding the direction of care and care options. No treatment is provided with this service, but imaging, laboratory and other testing may be provided with authorization from the referring party.
